Day 5-Maadi

We had a free day today and I was so excited for this particular day since we were going to Maadi, the town Regan grew up in. We took an uber and started walking all day. We started walking to all of the houses that Regan grew up in. The first house had a Boab {someone who watches the house all day} in front of the house and told us not to take a picture. We were worried that we wouldn't be able to see Regan's school. When we got to CAC {Cairo American College}, Regan explained that he had graduated from this school in 1997. They welcomed us with open arms! They had a whole alum department who gave Regan a school key card that he could come in and out whenever he wanted, and then they gave us an hour long tour of the whole campus. The campus was amazing! A huge building for elementary, middle and high school, sports building, art  building, music building, library. I felt so at ease at CAC. For me to hear Regan's memories of this school was so cool.
After the tour, we went to the library and spent an hour just looking at all of the yearbooks Regan was in. I have never seen one of his year books so it was so cool to see what he was involved in.  The way he describes his senior year, "I was such an idiot!" I could not stop laughing when I read what his senior picture quote said...see below!

Regan's family friend, El Hamy made this mosaic art in the art building.

Regan said he spent hours and hours in the sports building.

Regan would climb to the wooden platform and then jump to the swinging bar on the ceiling! When we told the kids this, they thought that was so cool.
Regan said he spent hours and hours swimming at this pool in the hot months.
He said he spent hours playing outdoor basketball at this court.

We sat on a bench in the middle of the school and I told Regan if we were to ever move to Egypt, I would want our kids to go to this school and we would live in Maadi. Seriously, the vibe at the school was so clean and safe. The graduating class are all going to amazing top colleges and it seemed like an amazing school. Being at the school and hearing Regan's experiences made me feel a lot closer to him and made me understand more of his childhood.

These pictures all came from his senior yearbook 1997.

I laughed SO hard when I read what Regan put on his senior picture.

Regan graduated from high school at the pyramids in 1997...no big deal.

Walking all around Maadi and hearing Regan tell me all of the stories of his childhood was SO awesome! Mardi is an awesome city! He would walk from his house to his Bible Study Class {seminary} each morning, then walk to school. We even went to the McDonalds that he and his friends loved to go.

We probably walked at least 10 miles today. We found a barber shop where Regan got the Best Haircut of his life. Seriously, they put a hot towel over his face, gave him a massage, plucked all of his nose hairs and eyebrows, and treated him like a King. I was super jealous!

In the middle of the day, we walked down to the Nile and took a Felucca boat ride. It was so awesome to be on the Nile on a Felucca all to ourselves! Such an amazing day!!!

We spent a lot time looking at all of the yearbooks Regan was in.

The best hair cut of Regan's life.
We were able to meet up with Ahmed Bessary and his beautiful family. It was so neat getting to know them! Ahmed was married to Regan's Mom for 12 years. His wife and 2 daughters were so sweet and kind.
We went to New Cairo with Ahmed and Abeer. They were so kind to us.
New Cairo was insane! Nothing like the Cairo we have been spending time in. It has a huge mall with Ikea and tons of American Stores and a huge movie theater.
