the science fair

Riley came home one day and said, "Mom, I want to do the science fair!" Well, it is totally optional, but he was so excited to do it that I had no choice. He and his friend Parker got talking at school and wanted to work together on it. They came up with an idea to use bubblegum for their experiment. After going to the 1 1/2 meeting, and teaching the boys what hypothesis, conclusions, and variables are, they came up with the idea to get 4 different kinds of gum and see what one is the best tasting and longest lasting.

We got Orbitz Mint, Double Bubble Gum, Trident Fruit Gum, and Extra Rootbeer Gum. The boys made a survey and bags with each of these gums and had their 3rd grade class taste test each of the gums. Their hypothesis was that the class would like the rootbeer gum the best and that double bubble gum would last the longest. After the class took the survey, they came to the conclusion that fruit gum was the best tasting and mint was the longest lasting.

Once they had gathered all of their information, putting the poster together was the next part. Of course I had to use my cricut machine for the letters, and I'm not going to lie...I helped a lot! Common, the boys are in 3rd grade--if I would have just let them have at it on the poster, it probably wouldn't have looked that great.

So on the day of the science fair, I helped the boys set up their poster and quizzed the boys on everything about their science fair. The parents were asked to leave, and the boys were judged and had to answer questions about their project. When I picked them up, they said they felt good about answering the judges questions.

Unfortunately, we weren't able to go to the awards ceremony for the science fair because Riley was playing in his jr jazz championship game so his friend went to it. Well, I got a text during the basketball game from my friend saying that the boys won the science fair!!! I'm glad that they had a fun, positive experience!
